Mutation comparison yields cancer insight
Canadian researchers have decoded the genetic structure of metastatic lobular breast cancer by unlocking the 3-billion-letter DNA sequence and identifying mutations that promote the disease's spread. The researchers used DNA sequencing to compare a single patient's lobular breast cancer tumor at two times: when the cancer first presented itself and when it came back nine years later. They found 32 mutations in the latter set and five in the early set, indicating that disease's cause lay within the five. Article
