Fall must be the season of clinical trial software--Akaza Research has unveiled version 3.0 of OpenClinica, its open-source electronic data capture (EDC) software. The announcement follows by just two weeks the Nextrials announcement of version 3.0 of its Prism platform for electronic data capture and clinical trial management. And the prior week had seen the debut of ClearTrial's clinical trial operations software--another version 3.0. Only Nextrials calls its product a CTMS, though both the Akaza and Nextrials offerings contain CTMS elements.

Akaza notes that OpenClinica 3.0 boasts a study progress dashboard and improved query workflows, with notifications, chain of custody, and task management. A source data verification workspace, faster page load time, and dedicated study-build module are also part of the upgraded package. Of course, like all software upgrades, version 3.0 includes the ubiquitous "streamlined user interface."

"Contributions from both industry and academic users and developers have allowed us to release the most feature rich, thoroughly tested, and high performance version of OpenClinica to date," says Paul Galvin, OpenClinica project manager at Akaza.

The software is free for organizations to download, use and modify. Installation and upgrade scripts for those using earlier versions are also available.

OpenClinica Enterprise, the commercial distribution of OpenClinica, is available through Akaza. Webinar presentations are scheduled for October 28.
