CTMS upgrade to aid cancer efforts

Version 2.0 of the caBIG open-source Clinical Trials Suite bundles patient, adverse-event, and lab data, as well as clinical functionality. CaBIG is the Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid, an information network of the National Cancer Institute's Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology.

The upgrade will likely help the Institute in an ambitious effort to recruit 1 million women for a breast cancer population study launched in October 2008 with the Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation. The so-called Love/Avon Army of Women stands at 324,590 volunteers as of last week.

Improved patient registration, tracking, and activity scheduling are part of the caBIG 2.0 package, which the Center says can be used in clinical trials for cancer and other conditions. The software also provides for reporting and tracking adverse events, reviewing laboratory data, capturing and cleaning clinical data, transferring clinical data between applications, and data analysis and reporting.
